Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Below you will find information for the most commonly asked questions.
What is a Legacy Letter or Ethical Will?
A Legacy Letter, traditionally known as an Ethical Will, is a document in which the writer shares personal values and beliefs, life stories, advice, etc., with the intent of passing them on to future generations.
Is a legacy Letter a legal document?
A Legacy Letter is a story about your life, it is not a legal document.
Is my story interesting enough to share?
Story is the great equalizer. The housewife has as much to teach as the Chief Executive Officer. The farmer's story is as valuable as the President's. Our physical and monetary assets may vary greatly but our stories are universally, democratically equal.
At what age should you write a legacy letter?
Now is the perfect time for everyone, because none of us knows what might happen in the future. Milestones such as graduation, marriages, engagements, the birth of your baby, or your granddaughter are naturally a little bit reflective. People write upon divorce or upon remarriage. There's no right time. You can rewrite your Letter or re-evaluate whenever you wish.
how long is a legacy letter
I suggest twenty pages tops. One of the things I do when I'm guiding you through the process, is that I do not let you get bogged down at any one particular stage. It's hard to take the time in our busy lives to do this. Once we get started, I say write one page for one half hour, 15 minutes only in this particular section, keep moving...moving you through your life and through your stories. We write, and it just flows.
How long does this program take?
Set aside about ten hours of time in total to get your Legacy Letter written. I recommend a weekend. You can get started on Friday night, write several hours Saturday and finish Sunday afternoon. If you are unable to carve out a weekend, spread out the writing. Because of the course structure, you can easily drop back into the writing process any time.
what if i am not a writer?
My instructions will guide your memories, stories, values, beliefs, gratitude, wisdom, advice, hopes and blessings onto the page. I just ask that you trust the process and work methodically through the exercises. The structure of this course is not random. There is technical order you will be aware of, but the reader will not. When your writing is complete, we will remove the headings and your document will read as one smooth, flowing, seamless, Letter.
Do I need to be "Computer confident" or can i physically write?
This program was originally designed with the intention of using two notepads and a pen for your writing. There are multiple options for you to complete your writing:
- You can print out the Workbook, follow along and write in it as we go,
- You may print out only the Worksheets to write on as we go,
- Simply type in the digital file of the Workbook from your preferred device,
- Work in the digital file of only the Worksheets from your preferred device, or
- You may, of course, use two notepads and a pen.
what if i am unable or my parent is physically unable to write?
If illness, disability or advanced years has affected your ability to write or type, a loved one can record or tape your responses. You and your family may use our program for parents, helping them to tell their stories and encouraging them to record all the wonderful and memorable events that shaped, their lives and ultimately yours.
What is your return policy?
Thirty days or less from the original purchase date, credit card and PayPal purchases will be credited back to the original form of payment; thereafter, returns will not be accepted, subject to the terms of our Return Policy.
i don't want to think about dying yet, is that what this is about?
Writing your Legacy Letter is not about dying. In fact, it's about your story and wisdom living forever. It's preserving your story now.
Why should i pay for this?
You cannot put the price on leaving your Legacy Letter to future generations. Your story will be far more valuable than the price you pay for the course to write the letter. Your life lessons learned, your own experiences and truths are worth their weight in gold to those who will read your letter in the future.
I am not sure i want my story to be told. do i have to share everything?
Your story, family myths, joyous memories, hardships, lifestyles and even secrets are priceless to your future generations. But we don't want this to cause undue painful memories. Only write the things that you feel you are ready to share. By telling your stories, including the difficult ones, you are giving the gift of your life lessons to future generations, so they can make decisions based on your experiences and hard-earned wisdom.
I don't have children, is this course for me?
Yes, you still have both life lessons and material possessions to leave to others, be it other family members, friends or connections you have made who are valuable to you in life.
can anyone online see my Legacy letter?
No, what you create, and all your notes are private to you. You are the only person who will see your Legacy Letter until you are ready to leave it.
We are available with email support if you have questions.
